同音異義語

We will be talking about homonyms.


Juliana: Have you ever had a problem when communicating using homonyms? In both English and Japanese, I have had experiences that needed further clarification. For example, a word like 'hashi' has two meanings 'chopsticks' and 'bridge' but ideally they have emphasis on different syllables.

Naoyuki: Yeah, That may be difficult to see which is 'chopsticks' and which is 'bridge'. For Japanese people it's hard to see the difference between 'R' sound and 'L' sound. So we are always worried about that.

Juliana: The most difficult part of these homonyms are especially experienced when learning a new language. For foreigners in Japan, homonyms might be the cause of miscommunication many times. Whilst, for the Japanese learning English, their nightmare might be the same as the former group.

Naoyuki: That's true. We sometimes understand the meaning from context. That will help us much. I believe if we keep communicating, we can understand each other.

Juliana: I totally concur with you. Actually, extracting the meaning from context is the most appropriate approach to understanding homonyms.

今日は同音異義語について話します。

ジュリアナ： 同音異義語を使って会話をするとき、困ったことって今までにある？私は英語と日本語両方で、より説明が必要になったことがあるわ。例えば、「はし」のような語は、「箸」と「橋」の２つの意味があるし。でも理想を言えば、それらは違った音節が強調されているのでしょうけど。

ナオユキ： うん、「箸」か「橋」かを判断するのは難しいのかもしれないね。日本人にとっては、「R」と「L」の音の違いを判断するのが大変なんだ。だから僕らはそれについていつも悩んでいる。

ジュリアナ： これら同音異義語の一番難しい部分って、特に新しい言語を学んでいるときに経験するわよね。日本にいる外国人にとっては、同音異義語が誤解を招く原因に何度もなっているに違いないわ。英語を学んでいる日本人にとっても、前の人たちと同じ悪夢があるのでしょう。

ナオユキ： 確かにそうだね。僕らは時々文脈から意味を理解することができるから、すごく助かるよね。僕は、会話を続ければ、お互い理解できるようになると信じているよ。

ジュリアナ： 私もあなたとまったく同意見。実際、文脈から意味を引き出すことは、同音異義語を理解するのに一番合った方法ね。
