夏休みの宿題

We will be talking about Summer Holiday Homework.

Naoyuki: I never used to do my summer holiday homework until the last minute, were you like that or did you properly plan it out and do it in plenty of time?

David: Actually I don't think we ever had summer holiday homework. In Britain September is the start of a new school year, so everybody changes class. I don't know about nowadays though. In recent years homework seems to have increased hugely. Do Japanese kids have to do a lot of homework in summer?

Naoyuki: I think so. We got homework for lots of subjects. I think we had to do it, but it was always the last thing I did, every year.

David: I suppose that's true of all kids. I can't imagine a teenager or younger child planning out his or her homework from the beginning of the holiday.

Naoyuki: I had a friend in elementary school who did homework every night from 8-10. Eventually he went to the University of Tokyo. If you study properly right from childhood I suppose it's possible to enter that university...

David: But I don't think life would be very fun for a child studying from 8-10 every day. That's when the best programmes are on TV and when your friends are playing video games. In summer I was always playing outside until 8pm, then I would have dinner, so there was no time for studying.

Naoyuki: That's an ordinary child!

今日は夏休みの宿題について話します。

ナオユキ： 僕は夏休みの宿題は最後の最後までやらなかったなー。君も同じだった？それともきちんと計画を立てて、余裕でやってた？

デーヴィッド： 実際のところ、夏休みの宿題はなかったね。イギリスでは9月が新学期の開始だから、クラスが変わるんだよね。最近のことは良く分からないけど。宿題は最近ではすごく増えてきているように見えるね。日本の子供は夏にたくさん宿題をやらないといけないの？

ナオユキ： そうだね。たくさんの科目で宿題が出たよ。やらないといけないと分かっていても、毎年いつも最後になっちゃうんだよね。

デーヴィッド： どの子も同じだと思うよ。10代の子やそれより若い子供が、休みの最初から宿題の計画を立てるなんて想像できないよ。

ナオユキ： 小学校の友達で、毎晩宿題を8時から10時までやってた子がいたけど、結局彼は東京大学に行ったんだよね。子供のころからきちんと勉強すれば、その大学に入れるかもね。。。
デーヴィッド： でも、毎日8時から10時まで勉強なんて、子供にとってはつまらないよ。その時間って一番良いテレビ番組やってるし、ビデオゲームやっている時間だよね。夏は僕はいつも8時まで外で遊んで、それからご飯を食べて、勉強の時間はなかったね。
ナオユキ： それが普通の子供だね！
