We will be talking about Nagasaki.


Caroline: Two years ago I visited Nagasaki and I had a lot of memorable experiences. One thing that shocked me was that you had martyrs too in Japan.

Naoyuki: Martyrs? What exactly is the meaning of martyrs?

Caroline: Martyrs are people who endure suffering or face death because of their faith in religion. There were some cases in Nagasaki in the 17th century.

Naoyuki: Yeah, during the Edo period, fumie plaques with images of Christ or the Virgin Mary were used to find secret Christians and some people were killed...

Caroline: Yes, that is a sad story. However, I think that is only in the past. Nowadays there are many christians in Japan. I go to a church in Shibuya and there are so many people there.
The church actually has 3 floors. You are welcome !!

今日は長崎について話します。

カロライン： 2年前に長崎に行ったんだけど、たくさんのすばらしい経験をしたわ。１つショックを受けたのは、日本にも殉教者がいたってこと。

ナオユキ： 殉教者？殉教者って正確にはどういう意味？

カロライン： 殉教者とは、宗教の信仰のために、苦しみに耐えている人や、死に直面する人たちなの。17世紀の長崎にもいくつかの事例があったわ。

ナオユキ： うん、江戸時代には、隠れキリシタンを見つけるために、キリストや聖母マリアの像が彫られた踏絵版が使われたんだ。そして、人々が殺されて。。。

カロライン： ええ、悲しい話ね。でも、それは過去だけの話だと思うわ。最近では、日本にもたくさんのキリスト教徒がいるのよ。渋谷の教会に行くと、そこにはとてもたくさんの人がいるわ。教会は実際3階建てなの。あなたも歓迎よ！！

ナオユキ： 宗教興味ない。。。
