世界地図

We will be talking about world maps.


Naoyuki: I'm used to seeing a world map with Japan in the center. So when I first saw a different world map, I was a little bit surprised.

Caroline: For me it's the opposite. I was surprised to see a world map with Japan as the centre. All my life I have seen maps with Africa at the centre. I guess then every country has itself as the centre. Is that true?

Naoyuki: I'm not sure, but I heard many countries use a map with the Greenwich Meridian in the center. I think that's the reason Africa is the center of a world map.

Caroline: Oh ! That must be the reason because most of the maps that I have seen are not all from Africa, but they have Africa as the centre.

今日は世界地図について話します。

ナオユキ： 僕、日本が中心にある世界地図を見慣れているんだ。だから、初めて違う世界地図を見たときは、ちょっと驚いたよ。

カロライン： 私にとっては反対ね。私は日本を中心とした世界地図を見てびっくりしたわ。生まれてこの方、私はアフリカを中心とした世界地図をずっと見てきたのよ。どの国も自分の国を中心としているんじゃない。これって本当？

ナオユキ： どうだろう、でも、多くの国はグリニッジ子午線が中心の地図を使っているって聞いたよ。だからアフリカが世界地図の中心になっていると思うんだよね。

カロライン： へー！それが理由に違いないわね。 だって、私がこれまで見たほとんどの地図は、アフリカのものだけではないけれど、アフリカを中心にしていたもの。
