時間の読み方

We will be talking about how to read time.

Naoyuki: What time is it now?

Caroline: Well, it's a quarter past six. Oh, my watch is five minutes ahead. So it's actually ten past six.

Naoyuki: Thanks, but the Japanese way of saying time is different from the English one. In Japanese we just say it's six ten. I think it's easier.

Caroline: Well, in case of 6:10 we say it's six ten, it's ten (minutes) past six or its ten (minutes) after six.

In case of 6:50 we say it's six fifty, it's ten (minutes) to seven or its ten (minutes) before seven.

In case of 6:00 we say it's six, it's six sharp or it's six on the dot.

Naoyuki: Which of the above is the most commonly used?

Caroline: Well, you don't need to worry so much about which one to use. Any of the above expressions is correct.

ナオユキ： どうも、でも、日本語の時間の言い方と英語のって違うね。日本語ではただ、six ten って言うけど。そっちのほうが簡単だと思うなー。

カロライン： うーん、6:10 の場合、six ten か、ten (minutes) past six か、ten (minutes) after six って言うわね。

6:50 の場合は、six fifty か、ten (minutes) to seven か、ten (minutes) before seven ね。

6:00 の場合は、six か、six sharp か、six on the dot ね。

ナオユキ： どれが一番よく使われるの？
カロライン： ふーん、どれを使うなんて、そんなに心配する必要ないわよ。どの表現も正解よ。
