We will be talking about earthquakes.
Naoyuki: The newspaper says that Friday's earthquake was 9.0 on the Richter scale. That's the biggest one in my lifetime.
Frankie: Yeah, it was intense. The whole building was shaking for almost ten minutes straight. I have to admit, I was a little scared.
Naoyuki: Did you know my computer is helping to compute the magnitude of earthquakes?
Frankie: How's that?
Naoyuki: Well, most laptops have what is called an accelerometer in them, which is a device that measures vibration. My computer is part of the Quake Catcher Network, which is a network of computers all over the world, sending vibration data from the computer's accelerometer to a central computer at Stanford University.
Frankie: So the central computer takes all of that vibration data, and determines the location and magnitude of each earthquake?
Naoyuki: That's right, and it is free to join. It helps scientists understand earthquakes more clearly, so if you have a few computers to spare, why not sign up?

ナオユキ： うん、ほとんどのノートパソコンは、振動を計測する加速度計という装置が取り付けられているんだ。僕のコンピュータは、クエイクキャッチャーネットワークの一部で、それは世界中のコンピュータのネットワークなんだけど、コンピュータの加速度計からの振動情報をスタンフォード大学の中央コンピュータに送っているんだ。
フランキー： それじゃー、その中央コンピュータがすべての振動情報を取って、それぞれの地震の場所とマグニチュードを決めるの？
