相撲

This week, we will be discussing Sumo from the perspective of a non-Japanese person.

David: Japanese people often express surprise that non-Japanese enjoy watching Sumo. I believe this is because Japanese see Sumo as a very traditional "Japanese sport" so they are taken aback when non-Japanese show interest.
Naoyuki: Definitely Japanese see Sumo as a very traditional thing. However I feel it's not so much a "sport", but something sacred. I think Sumo is different from other sports.

I think many non-Japanese see Sumo to see what the Japanese culture is like.

David: Actually, this is not always the case. Most non-Japanese who like Sumo like it because it is a fun and exciting sport. It is like wrestling, but faster. It is very easy to understand. Among the rikishi there are lots of interesting characters and personalities (such as Takamisakari, Asashoryu, Ama and Chiyotaikai). It is not a comedy-sport like professional wrestling is in other countries. Also, many countries - such as Turkey, Greece, Spain and Bulgaria - have long traditions of wrestling which are very similar to Sumo, so it is easy for people from those countries to understand and appreciate.　If you are interested in what those people have to say about Sumo, you can take a look at this site.

Naoyuki: I understand what you mean, but I don't like it when Sumo is called a "sport". That's the Japanese feeling for Sumo. Can you understand?
David: Not really. I can understand the ritualistic aspects of Sumo - like throwing salt, clapping hands and stamping feet. But I think at its heart it has always been watched for entertainment, so that means it is a sport.
Naoyuki: Recently not only Sumo but other sports are used for earning money by the media. So the tradition may be changing.
Anyway I understand some non-Japanese really like Sumo.

今週は、外国人の目から見た相撲について話します。
デーヴィッド：日本人は外国人が相撲を楽しんで見ているとたいてい驚くね。これは、日本人が相撲を伝統的なスポーツだと見ていて、外国人が興味を示すと、それが思い起こされるからだろうね。

ナオユキ：確かに日本人は相撲を伝統的なものとして見ているね。でも、スポーツというか、もっと神聖なものと感じているよ。相撲は他のスポーツとは違うと。多くの外国人は相撲を日本の文化がどんなものかを知るために見ているんじゃないかな。

デーヴィッド：実際それがいつも当てはまるわけではないね。相撲好きの外国人のほとんどは、相撲が楽しくて、エキサイティングなスポーツだから好きなんだよ。レスリングみたいだけど、もっとスピードがあって。とても分かりやすいんだね。力士の中には、とてもおもしろい個性を持った人もたくさんいるし（高見盛、朝青龍、安馬、千代大海とか）。相撲は、他の国のプロレスのような、お笑いのスポーツではない。後、トルコ、ギリシャ、スペイン、ブルガリアのような多くの国では、相撲にとてもよく似たレスリングで長い伝統を持っている。だから、それらの国から来た人には、理解しやすいく、良さも分かるんだろうね。
ナオユキ：言ってることは分かるけど、相撲がスポーツと呼ばれるのは何かいやだなー。それが日本人の相撲に対する感覚なんだよね。分かる？

デーヴィッド：いや、それほど。相撲の儀式的な面（塩を投げるとか、手をたたくとか、しこを踏むとか）は分かるけど、ずっと前から娯楽のために見られているからそういう意味ではスポーツなんじゃないの。
ナオユキ：最近は相撲に限らず、他のスポーツもメディアの金儲けのために利用されているから、伝統も変わっていってしまうかもね。とにかく、外国人でも相撲を本当に好きな人がいることは分かったよ。
