Today we'll talk about Football in Olympic Games.

Naoyuki: So the Olympics is going to start at last. I'll be supporting the Japanese football team. The UK is good at football, but how are they in the Olympics?

David: There is no British football team at the Olympics.

Naoyuki: Really? Did they lose in the qualifiers?

David: No. In the UK the Football Associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are separate, so there is no UK football team. In the Olympics the team is for the entire UK, so there can be no football team at the Olympics for us.

Naoyuki: Oh, I never knew that. So that's why I never hear about the UK football team at the Olympics.

David: So British people don't really have much interest in football at the Olympics. Like in most countries where football is popular, we care more about the World Cup and the European Championship.

Naoyuki: Oh yeah, England isn't an independent nation, but it still enters tournaments. If all the British teams got together they'd be a lot better.

David: But it's tradition. Football started in the British Isles, so it's been this way since the beginning. You can't change it now.

今日はオリンピックのサッカーについて話します。

ナオユキ：　いよいよオリンピックが始まるねー。僕は、サッカー日本代表を応援しているよ。イギリスはサッカーが強いけど、オリンピックはどうなの？

デーヴィッド：　イギリスはオリンピックに出ていないよ。

ナオユキ：　えー？？そうなんだっけー。予選で負けたの？

デーヴィッド：　いや、イギリスのサッカーは、イングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドとサッカー協会が分かれていて、イギリス１つのチームとしての代表はないんだよね。オリンピックでは、イギリスとしての参加しか認められていないから、結局参加できないんだ。

ナオユキ：　へー。初めて知ったよ。だからオリンピックではイギリスのこと聞いたことがないんだね。

デーヴィッド：　そうなんだ。だから、イギリスの人はオリンピックのサッカーには興味を持っていないんだ。他のサッカーの人気ある国みたいに、ワールド・カップ、UEFA欧州選手権で盛り上がるんだ。

ナオユキ：　そうだよね。イングランドは、独立した国ではないのに出場してるもんね。１つのチームにしたらもっと強くなりそうだけどね。。。

デーヴィッド：でも伝統的なものだからね。サッカーはイギリスで生まれたから、最初からこうだったんだ。今さら変えられないね。
