外国人に対しての日本人の反応

Today we'll be talking about reactions of Japanese people towards foreign people.

Yoshiko: You've been in Japan for four years, so how are things? Do you often get stared at by people?

David: Usually only in a hot spring! Also, if I ever go to the countryside I get stared at, usually by old people or children. It's annoying, but it can't really be helped, I suppose.

Yoshiko: Oh yeah, I remember you saying that about hot springs! Around Tokyo there are lots of foreign people, but I guess you could say they are not common. Even within Japan, I can remember going to Amami and being recognised as a "honshu person" by a local kid! It was funny. For some reason when I go abroad people think I'm Korean, so I often get people speaking to me in Korean.

David: That's funny. When I was working in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, people often said I looked Russian. When my wife comes to the UK, she often gets mistaken for a Chinese person, with people waving at her and saying "ni hao!" She always gets annoyed! I can understand how she feels. Often Japanese people say to me, "Are you American?" It's okay at first, but I must have been asked that question a thousand times since coming to Japan! But I suppose it's hard for Japanese people to tell the difference between different white ethic groups. Of course, European people also have difficulty telling Chinese, Japanese, Korean and South East Asian people apart.

今日は外国人に対しての日本人の反応についてお話しします。

ヨシコ：デービッドは日本に来てから４年になるけど、どう？普段の生活の中ですごく人に見られたりするの？

デービッド：温泉に入ってる時以外は見られないよ！でも、田舎に行ったらよく老人や子供に見られるんだ。嫌なんだけど、仕方がないよね。


ヨシコ：あはは。温泉はそうだったわね！都会には外国人も多いけど、やはり珍しいのでしょうね～。

同じ日本の中でも、前に奄美に行ったとき、内地の人だと言われて子供に珍しがられたわ。私はなんだか面白かった。海外では、普通に韓国人と思われてて、韓国語で話しかけられたりしたのが面白かったわ。


デービッド: 面白いね。カザフスタンとキルギスタンに居た時に、僕はロシア人とよく思われた。あと、妻がイギリスに居る時に、よく中国人と思われて、「ニーハオ」と言われてた。嫌がってたね。その気持ちわかるよ。僕はよく「アメリカ人ですか」と聞かれる。最初は別に気にしなかったけど、でもその質問を何千回と聞かれた気がする。日本人には、白人の違いが分かりにくいのかな？でも逆に、ヨーロッパの人は、東アジア系の人、例えば中国人、韓国人、日本人、の違いもわからないんだろうね。
