Naoyuki: So after two years of campaigning you finally elected a president in the U.S. How do you feel about it?

Ken: I'm very proud and excited about it. It's still hard to believe though, since it was such a long and tough campaign. I know a lot of people were also supporting McCain, and I respect him for his service to the country, but I was really rooting for Obama to win. It seemed impossible this same time last year, but now it's become a reality. How do Japanese people feel about Obama winning?

Naoyuki: I'm sure the people in Obama city Japan are very happy, since it gives their town more attention. Other than that, I'm not sure how Japanese people feel in general. In my opinion, I think watching America choose its first
black president is exciting. I hope it leads to a decrease in racial intolerance in the world, by showing that anyone can rise to the top, regardless of their race.

Ken: I hope so too. I'd be happy if at least it led to more open-mindedness in the U.S. itself. There are still some people in the U.S. who strongly dislike members of other races, so we still have a way to go. Fortunately, though, a lot of people from all races in America voted for Obama, so it's a sign that things are getting better in terms of race relations in the U.S.

Naoyuki: It sounds like Americans still have some work to do. We don't have such a mixed society in Japan, but we do have some such social problems as well, like people bullying each other. We're also working on trying to reduce such problems in our country.

Ken: It looks like everybody in the world has a lot of work to do to make better, more open societies in the future.

今日はアメリカ次期大統領として選出されたバラク　オバマ氏について話します。

ナオユキ： 2年間のキャンペーンを経て、ついにアメリカの次期大統領が決まったね。どう感じてる？

ケン： とても誇りに思っているし、興奮しているよ。まだ信じられないね、とても長くて大変なキャンペーンだったから。僕は、マケインを応援していた人をたくさん知っているし、国へ貢献してきた彼を尊敬している。でも、オバマが勝つことを本当に望んでいたよ。去年の今頃は不可能に見えたけど、今は現実になった。日本の人たちはオバマの勝利をどう感じているの？

ナオユキ： 小浜市の人はとても喜んでいると思うね。町がより注目されるからね。それ以外で日本の人がどう感じているか分からないけど、私個人としては、アメリカが最初の黒人の大統領を選んだことに興奮しているよ。それが世界の人種差別を減らす方向に動いてくれればと願っている。人種に関係なく誰でもトップになれるということを示すことでね。

ケン： 僕もそう願うよ。少なくともアメリカでもっとオープンな考え方が広がればうれしいね。でもアメリカには、他人種の人たちを強く嫌っている人たちもいる。だから、まだ道半ばだね。でも幸運なことにアメリカの全人種の多くの人がオバマに投票した。それは、アメリカの人種問題が良くなってきているという証拠だね。

ナオユキ： アメリカはまだまだやることはありそうだね。日本は他人種が混ざっている社会ではないけど、いじめとか社会的な問題はある。日本でもそのような問題をなくそうとしているよ。

ケン： より開かれた未来の社会を作るために、世界中でたくさんやることがありそうだね。
