成人式

This entry is about Coming of Age ceremony.


Naoyuki: In Japan people who are coming of age will attend ceremonies held throughout the country. In recent years, however, some of the people behave badly and there is a local government which doesn't have the ceremony. Is there any ceremony like that in the U.S.?

John: So you mean it is a celebration for young people becoming adults?

Naoyuki: Yeah, that's right.

John: The closest thing we have to that is either high school graduation, we are legally adult at age 18. Or your 21st birthday when you can officially drink liquor for the first time. Anytime you put a lot of young people together waiting to party there is bound to be trouble.

Naoyuki: Actually, if there are old people together waiting to party, they might have a good conversation. I think young people experience many things and then become an adult. The age may not be a big deal.

今日は成人式について話します。

ナオユキ： 日本では成人になる人たちが、日本各地で行われる式典に参加するんだ。でも最近は、一部の人たちの態度が悪く、式典を開催しない地方自治体もある。アメリカには似たような式典はあるの？

ジョン： それは成人になる若い人たちのための式典ってこと？

ナオユキ： うん、そうそう。

ジョン： それに一番似たものは、高校の卒業式かな。僕らは法的に１８歳で大人になるから。それか、公式に初めてお酒を飲むことができる２１歳の誕生日かな。どんなときでも、たくさんの若い人を一緒にお祭りのために待たせていたら、問題が起きそうだよね。

ナオユキ： 実際、年取った人たちがお祭りのために待っていたら、良い会話がされるんだろうなー。僕思うけど、若い人たちはいろいろなことを経験して大人になる。年齢は重要ではないのかもね。
