初詣

We will be talking about Hatsumode.


Naoyuki: Have you visited a shrine this year? We call "Hatsumode", the first shrine visit of the New Year in Japan. People pray for happiness and good health for the year.

Juliana: I haven't visited any shrine this year. I was in the dark, I didn't know anything about "Hatsumode". Well, have you visited a shrine this year?

Naoyuki: Not yet this year. Hatsumode is one of our customs. When we go to a shrine, we sometimes draw "Omikuji" to learn our fortune for the new year. Have you ever drawn "Omikuji"?

Juliana: wow! I have never drawn "Omikuji" because I have never experienced Hatsumode. If the Omikuji's predication is negative, can you reverse it? Are you planning to visit a shrine? Is there a deadline for visiting the shrine?

Naoyuki: When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold up the strip of paper and attach it to a pine tree in the shrine grounds. A purported reason for this custom is a pun on the word for pine tree and the verb 'to wait', the idea being that the bad luck will wait by the tree. There is no deadline for visiting a shrine. 今日は初詣について話します。

ナオユキ： 今年神社に行った？日本では新年最初に神社に行くことを「初詣」って言うんだ。人々はその年の幸せと健康を祈るんだ。

ジュリアナ： 今年はまだ神社に行ってないわ。私詳しくないの、初詣についてはよく知らなかったわ。今年は神社に行った？

ナオユキ： 今年はまだだね。初詣は僕らの慣習の１つだよ。神社に行く時は、新年の運勢を占うために「おみくじ」を時々引くよ。 「おみくじ」は引いたことある？

ジュリアナ： うわあー。私初詣って経験したことないから、おみくじも引いたことないわー。 もしおみくじの予言が悪かったら、それを反対にすることはできるの？ 神社行く予定は？神社に行くのに期限はあるの？

ナオユキ： 予言が悪かったら、その紙切れを折って神社にある松ノ木にくっつけるんだ。なんでそんな慣習かというと、 松の木と動詞の「待つ」の言葉をもじったと言われていて、悪い運が松のそばで待つという考えなんだ。神社に行くのに期限はないから。試してみて！
