時間厳守

We will be talking about punctuality.

Caroline: I had a couple of culture shock issues when I first came to Japan.

Naoyuki: Oh, really. What is it?

Caroline: The most shocking one was how Japanese culture emphasizes punctuality and deadlines. I missed the train a number of times before I could get used to the system. I complained a lot and thought it was a stiff system but now I have come to appreciate it a lot. It leads to efficiency and mostly to success too.

Naoyuki: That's right, but I don't know much about the other countries. So do you know anything about the cases in other countries?

Caroline: Yes, I think other countries are not as disciplined as Japan. I would rank Japan as number one on punctuality.

Naoyuki: Number one!! Why do you think so?

Caroline: In most countries, you can be late as long as you have "a good excuse". In Japan it is embarrassing to start explaining the situation. Japanese people are very apologetic. If they ever get late, they will apologize but they hardly ever give reasons like : it was raining, there was an accident, I missed the train, etc. Actually when you miss the train due to an accident you get a slip from the train station master to give to your boss. Interesting !!

Naoyuki: I think it's very important to be punctual especially in business. As a professional worker you need to consider all the situations in advance not to be late for meetings or appointments, etc. This sounds like a typical Japanese, huh?

Caroline: It does sound like a typical Japanese ..... but you are right. Oops ! I think I have been "Japanised" too!!

今日は時間厳守について話します。

カロライン： 私日本に初めて来た時、 いくつかカルチャーショックだったんだけど。

ナオユキ： へー本当。何？

カロライン： 一番ショックだったのが、日本の文化が時間を守ることと期限を重要視してることね。私それに慣れるまで、何度も電車を乗り過ごしたわ。私何度も文句言ったし、とても厳しいシステムだと思ったの。でも今はとてもありがたく思っているわ。効率的だし、ほとんどの場合成功にも導くし。

ナオユキ： そうだね、でも僕は他の国のことはよく知らないんだよね。君は何か他の国の事例を知っている？

カロライン： ええ、他の国は日本ほど規律があるとは思えないわ。時間厳守については、私は日本を１位にするわ。

ナオユキ： １位！！なんでそう思うの？

カロライン： ほとんどの国では、「良い言い訳」があれば遅刻できるの。日本では状況を説明し始めることが、恥ずかしいことでしょう。日本の人たちとてもすまなさそう。もし彼らが遅れたら、謝るけど、雨が降ってたとか、事故があったとか、電車に乗り遅れたみたいな理由は言わないわ。実際事故で電車に乗り遅れたら、上司に渡すために、駅長から紙片をもらうでしょう。面白い！！

ナオユキ： 僕は時間厳守はとても重要なことだと思うよ、特に仕事では。プロの働き手としてすべての状況を前もって考慮しておかなければならない、会議や約束とかに遅れないためにね。これって、典型的な日本人みたい、じゃない？

カロライン： 本当典型的な日本人みたい、、、でもあなたは正しいわ。あっ！私も日本人化してるわ！
