イクラ

We will be talking about Ikura (salmon roe).


Naoyuki: Is there any Japanese food you cannot eat?

Caroline: I have never eaten Ikura (salmon roe), Tarako (salted cod roe) or Mentaiko (marinated cod roe in cayenne peppers).

Naoyuki: Really!! I like all of them. Why not?

Caroline: When I was young my mother used to give me some medicine which is made from fish oil (especially salted cod roe). It is called Scott's emulsion. It is very effective for treatment and prevention of cold, cough and makes your body strong. I didn't like it and so she could hold my nose tight so that I could then open my mouth to breath. Next she would pour the medicine in my mouth. I am afraid that the fish eggs would have the same taste too.

Naoyuki: Strong mom! I can easily imagine the situation, but I guess tastes are different. So you should eat them. You will like them soon!


Caroline: I think I should try it now. It has recently been made into different flavors so may be the taste wouldn't be so bad. It also has a lot of important nutrients ; Vitamin A, D and E, calcium and phosphorus. This means it's good for your skin and bones too.

今日はイクラについて話します。

ナオユキ： 食べられない日本の食べ物って何かある？

カロライン： イクラやタラコや明太子は一度も食べたことないわ。

ナオユキ： 本当！！僕全部好きだよ。何でだめなの？

カロライン： 小さいころお母さんがよく私に魚の油（特にタラコ）から作られた薬を飲ませたの。スコット乳剤って言うんだけど。風邪、せきの治療や防止にとても効果があって、身体を強くするのよ。私好きじゃなかったから、お母さんが私の鼻を強くつまんで、息するために口を開けさせたの。そして私の口に薬を注ぎ込んだのよ。私魚の卵は同じ味がするんじゃないかって心配なのよね。

ナオユキ： お母さん強い！状況がすぐ想像できるるよ、でも味は違うと思うけどね。だから食べてみなよ。すぐ好きになるよ！
カロライン： 今すぐ食べたほうがいいわね。最近は違う味になったみたいだから、味は悪くないかもしれないけどね。たくさんの重要な栄養素（ビタミンA、D、E、カルシウム、リン）も含まれているし、肌にも骨にも良いみたいだし。
