大人の年齢

We will be talking about Age of Majority.


David: I read in the paper that the Japanese government is thinking of reducing the age of majority from 20 to 18. Do you know anything about it?

Naoyuki: They're also thinking about reducing the voting age, so if they do that they're probably thinking it would be best to reduce the age of majority too.

David: But I wonder why they're thinking about reducing the voting age.

Naoyuki: That's a difficult question. Apparently around 70% of the countries in the world have an age of majority of 18, so maybe that's part of the reason. Though I'm not sure why it's being discussed now. Also, there's a feeling in Japan that Japanese young people don't become independent until quite late.

David: That's often said, although I think it's true of young people in some European countries too. I heard most Italian men stay with their parents until they're around 30, for example. I don't know if lowering the age of majority will have any effect on that; I think societal attitudes are more important.

Naoyuki: Well, if the voting age is lowered to 18, that might make young people more interested in politics. That would be good, I suppose.

今日は大人の年齢について話します。

デーヴィッド： 新聞で読んだんだけど、日本政府は大人の年齢を20歳から18歳ににすることを検討しているんだって。何かそれについて知ってる？

ナオユキ： 彼らは投票できる年齢も低くすることを検討していて、もしそうするならば、大人になる年齢も下げたほうが良いんだと思っているんじゃないのかね。

デーヴィッド： でも何で彼らは、投票年齢を低くすることを検討しているの？

ナオユキ： 難しい質問だね。どうも世界の70％の国では、大人になる年齢が18歳みたいだよ。多分それも理由の１つじゃないかな。 でも何で今議論されているか分からないんだけど。あとは、日本では、日本の若者がかなり年を取っても独立しないという感覚があるね。

デーヴィッド： それはしばしば言われるね。でも僕はヨーロッパのいくつかの国々の若者でも同じだと思うな。例えば、イタリアの男性のほとんどは、30歳くらいまで両親と住んでいるって聞いたよ。大人になる年齢を下げることがどんな効果があるか良く分からないな。社会の意識のほうが重要じゃないかな。
ナオユキ： うーん、投票年齢を18歳に下げれば、若い人に政治に興味を持たせることができるかもね。それはきっといいことでしょう。
