ラグビーワールドカップ

We will be talking about the Rugby World Cup.

Naoyuki: It's been decided that Japan will host the 2019 Rugby World Cup! It will be the first time an Asian country has hosted it.

David: Oh really? I remember Japan wanted to host the 2011 World Cup too, but eventually it was given to New Zealand. The Japanese rugby union officials were very angry about it. They said rugby is already very popular in New Zealand, so in order to spread the sport's popularity, it should be held in Japan.

Naoyuki: It's not that rugby isn't popular in Japan, just that compared to football and baseball, the number of fans is rather low. If the World Cup is held here, I'm sure it'll get more popular.

David: I hope so. I watch a lot of international rugby games, and Japan's national team is always improving, so by 2019 they might be competitive with the major rugby playing countries. By the way, the 2015 rugby World Cup will be held in England, so maybe I can watch live games at both!

今日はラグビーワールドカップについて話します。

ナオユキ： 日本が2019年のラグビーワールドカップの開催国に決まったよ。アジアの国が開催するのは、初めてなんだよ。

デーヴィッド： へー本当？日本は確か2011年のワールドカップも開催したかったんじゃないかな。でも結局それはニュージーランドになったんだ。日本のラグビー協会の人たちはとても怒ったんだよ。彼らは、ニュージーランドではすでにラグビーはとても人気があり、そのスポーツの人気を広げるためには、日本で行われるべきだと。

ナオユキ： 日本でラグビーが人気がないわけじゃないんだよね。サッカーや野球と比べるとファンがやや少ないかと。もしワールドカップがここで行われれば、きっともっと人気が出るよ。

デーヴィッド： そう願うね。僕はたくさんラグビーの国際試合を見るけど、日本代表チームはいつもうまくなっているよ。だから2019年までに、メジャーなラグビーの国々と競い合えるようになるかもしれないね。ところで、2015年のラグビーワールドカップはイギリスで行われるんだ。だから多分僕は両方とも生で試合を見れるんだ。
