ハロウィーン

We will be talking about Halloween.


Naoyuki: So it'll be Halloween soon. Saying that, I don't know much about it.

David: Nor do I really. It's a Christian festival called "All Saints' Day", but its roots go back to the pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts believed that on October 31st dead people came to cause trouble for the living.

Naoyuki: Oh. Why is that made into a festival?

David: People used to make masks and costumes and Jack O' Lanterns to placate the dead spirits. So that's why nowadays people do that sort of thing.

Naoyuki: So you mean people pretend to be ghosts?

David: I think so. That meant that the ghosts would not be dangerous, but maybe be friendly.

Naoyuki: I see. This Halloween, let's become ghosts!

今日はハロウィーンについて話します。

ナオユキ： もうすぐハロウィーンだね。と言っても、よく知らないんだけど。

デーヴィッド： 実は僕も。それはキリスト教のお祭りで「諸聖人の日」というものなんだけど、その起源は紀元前のケルト人のお祭りのサーウィンなんだ。ケルト人は10月31日に死んだ人が生きるために問題を引き起こしに来る信じていたんだ。

ナオユキ： へー。何でそれがお祭りになったの？

デーヴィッド： 人々は死んだ人の魂を静めるために、マスクや衣装やジャックオーランタンを作るようになったんだ。それが今も似たようなことをやっている理由だよ。

ナオユキ： じゃー人々が幽霊になっているふりをしているってこと？
デーヴィッド： そうだと思うよ。幽霊は危険じゃなくて、多分親しみやすいということじゃないかな。
ナオユキ： なるほど。このハロウィーンは、幽霊になろう！
