将棋

We will be talking about Shogi.

Naoyuki: Shogi is one of the traditional games in Japan. I used to play shogi when I was a kid.

Caroline: Yeah, I hear a lot about shogi but I have never played shogi. How is it played and what are the rules?

Naoyuki: The rules of shogi are quite similar to chess. A player who captures the opponent's king wins the game.

Caroline: Oh ! So then we can say shogi is "Japanese chess" ? But unlike chess I see some kanji characters written on the pieces.

Naoyuki: Yes, each piece has its name written in kanji. So before playing shogi you need to learn kanji...

今日は将棋について話します。

ナオユキ： 将棋は、日本の伝統的なゲームの１つなんだ。子供の頃よくやったよ。

カロライン： ええ、将棋のことはよく聞くけど、私は一度もやったことないわ。どうやってやるの？ルールは？

ナオユキ： 将棋のルールは、チェスにかなり似ているよ。敵の王様を捕った人が勝ち。

カロライン： へー、じゃー将棋は「日本のチェス」ってこと？でも、チェスと違って、駒の上に漢字が見えるけど。

ナオユキ： うん、それぞれの駒は漢字で書かれた名前があるんだ。だから、将棋をする前に、漢字を勉強する必要があるね。。。
