丁髷

Naoyuki: I heard some foreign people believe that Japanese people still have the chonmage which was a form of Japanese traditional haircut worn by men in the Edo period.

Caroline: Hahaha !! That is true. By the way, they don't even call it chonmage. They call it "The Samurai Hairstyle".

Naoyuki: Oh, really. Samurai might be a more familiar word for them, since there was a movie called "The Last Samurai".

Caroline: Yes. What is the meaning of chonmage?

Naoyuki: Well...that's a good question. It is said that it was used for holding a kabuto steady atop the head in battle, and became a status symbol among Japanese society.

ナオユキ： へー本当。侍は彼らにはきっと馴染みがあるんだろうね。「ラストサムライ」っていう映画もあったしね。

カロライン： ええ。丁髷の意味って何なの？

ナオユキ： うーん、良い質問です。 それは、戦いのときに兜を頭のてっぺんに固定するために使われたと言われていて、日本の社会では地位の象徴となったんだ。
