怪談

We will be talking about ghost stories with one of our students, Osamu.

Osamu: It is summer once again and there will be many ghost stories.

Caroline: Really? What is the connection?

Osamu: Japanese people love to listen to such scary stories so that they can cool their minds.

Caroline: For me it is the opposite. Listening to such stories will not cool me down at all. Do you have any example?

Osamu: Yes, "GeGeGe no Kitaro" is one of them. It is famous among young and old Japanese people.

Caroline: I see ! So why is it called GeGeGe?

Osamu: For two reasons. One reason is that the writer's name is Shigeru Mizuki. When he was young he used to stammer and could not pronounce his name. He would say Ge..Ge...GeRu. The other reason is that GeGeGe is also like the sound that frogs make.

今日は生徒のオサムさんと共に、怪談について話します。

オサム： また夏だねー、そうするとたくさんの怪談話が出てくるんだ。

カロライン： 本当？何か関係あるの？

オサム： 日本の人たちは、自分たちの頭を冷ますために、そんな怖い話を聞くのが大好きなんだよ。

カロライン： 私には逆よ。そんな話聞いても全然涼しくならない。何か例を知っている？

オサム： うん、「ゲゲゲの鬼太郎」はその１つだね。若い人や年配の日本人にも人気があるよ。

カロライン： 知ってる！じゃー何でゲゲゲって言うの？

オサム： ２つ理由があるんだ。１つは作者の名前がミズキ シゲルで、彼は若いころ口ごもりがちで、自分の名前を発音できなかったんだ。彼は、ゲ,,ゲ,,,ゲルって言ってたんだ。もう１つの理由は、ゲゲゲがカエルの音のようにも聞こえるということだね。
