Naoyuki: Hey Frankie, how do you say "Ｂ級グルメ" in English?



Frankie: Hmmm... well... we don't really say that in English. Honestly, I don't know what to call it. Maybe "good, cheap food" would be accurate.

Naoyuki: I love that kind of food... fried noodles... okonomiyaki... Just thinking about it makes me hungry!


 Frankie: I know what you mean. I took some American friends out for kushiyaki the other night, and they loved it. One of them said it was the perfect match for beer.

Naoyuki: What kind of "Ｂ級グルメ" is popular in America?

Frankie: Well, there are so many different ethnicities in America, so there is a huge range of good, cheap food. Pizza is the most popular I think, but also there's lots of good cheap Chinese food, hoagies (or submarine sandwiches) are pretty popular as well. We go out for breakfast a lot on the weekends, which is always delicious and cheap. We call those kind of restaurants "greasy spoons".

Naoyuki: Isn't there any good, cheap Japanese food in America?

Frankie: Not really... just sushi. In America, we consider Japanese food to be "Ａ級グルメ".

Naoyuki: Ummm... Frankie... we don't really say "Ａ級グルメ" in Japanese.

ナオユキ： ねえ、フランキー、「B級グルメ」って英語で何て言うの？

フランキー： うーーん、、えーー、英語では実際そうは言わないね。正直、それを何て言うか知らないなー。多分、「良い安い食べ物」っていうのが正確かな。

ナオユキ： 僕はそういう食べ物、焼きそばとか、お好み焼きとか、大好きなんだよね。考えただけで、お腹が空いてくる。

フランキー： 君の言っている事分かるよ。この前の夜、アメリカの何人かの友達を串焼きに連れて行ったけど、彼ら気に入ったからね。その中の1人が、ビールにぴったりだって言ってたよ。

ナオユキ： アメリカで人気の「B級グルメ」はどんなものがあるの？

フランキー： うん、アメリカにはとても多くの異なる民族がいるから、良くて安い食べ物も、とても広範囲に及ぶんだ。ピザが一番人気があると思うけど、たくさんの良い安い中国料理もあるしね、ホーギー（あるいは、サブマリーンサンドイッチ）も同様にかなり人気あるよ。僕らは週末は朝食を食べに出かけるけど、いつもおいしくて安いね。僕らはそういうレストランを、「グリースィー・スプーン（薄汚い安食堂）」って呼ぶんだ。

ナオユキ： アメリカには、良い安い日本の食べ物はないの？

フランキー： そんなにないねー、、、お寿司だけ。アメリカでは、日本食は「Ａ級グルメ」として考えられるんだよ。

ナオユキ： うーーん、フランキー、日本語では「Ａ級グルメ」とは実際言わないんだよ。
