地震

This week, we will be discussing earthquakes.

Naoyuki: A big earthquake occurred in China 2 weeks ago and many people were injured or killed. Japan sent a medical party last week to help treat the survivors. I hope the teams save as many people as possible.

In Japan we also have earthquakes sometimes. How about in the UK?

David: There are sometimes earthquakes in the UK. Last year there was a relatively large quake that hit the South of the country. But the British Isles lie in the middle of a tectonic plate, so they are far from regular earth quake zones. The closest fault lines to Britain are around the Mediterranean Sea, so they are quite far away.

Naoyuki: I see. Have you experienced earthquakes in Japan?

David: Of course! Many times, thought fortunately not a big one. The first earthquake I felt was when I was working in Kamiooka, in Yokohama, pretty soon after I first arrived in Japan. I was working on the 11th floor of a building, so it was pretty scary.

Naoyuki: 11th floor... That sounds dangerous.

It is said that in the Kanto area we will have a big earthquake in the near future. We have to provide against an emergency.

今週は地震について話します。

ナオユキ：先々週中国で大きな地震が起こり、多くの人が怪我をし亡くなりました。先週日本は医療隊を送り、生存者の治療を行います。医療隊ができるだけ多くの生存者の命を救うことを願います。

日本でも時々地震があるけど、イギリスではどう？

デーヴィッド：イギリスでも時々起こるね。去年は比較的大きな地震が国の南部で起こったよ。だけど、イギリス諸島は地殻プレートの真ん中に位置しているから、よく地震が起きるところからは離れているね。

ナオユキ：なるほど。日本では地震にあったことある？

デーヴィッド：もちろん！何度もね、幸運なことに大きなものではないけど。最初に感じた地震は初来日してからすぐのことで、横浜の上大岡で働いていた時だった。11階で働いていたからとても怖かったよ。

ナオユキ：11階か。危険そうだね。

関東地方では、近い将来大きな地震があると言われています。緊急事態に備えていなければいけませんね。
