パン

This time, we will be talking about bread.

David: I don't like Japanese bread very much. There's a big difference between bread you buy in the UK and bread you buy in Japan.

Yoshiko: Oh, really? I suppose bread has been around in the UK for longer than in Japan, but what's the difference?

David: It's hard to explain, but Japanese bread feels a little artificial to me. For example, the sandwiches you buy in shops never have crusts! That's would never happen in the UK. And the taste isn't so good. I imagine it's the same as a Japanese person eating sushi prepared by a British chef.

Yoshiko: I see what you mean. When I was a child I used to hate the crust. But now I've started to make my own bread and I've really started to like crusts. So I understand what you mean about no crusts being unnatural. Also, it's obvious you really like bread! Mind you, it's the staple food in Britain, right?

David: Yeah, it's natural that everybody prefers the food they grew up eating. I've been eating British bread since I was a child so it's what I'm used to. I don't mind Japanese rice but it isn't the same. Obviously that works the other way around.

今回はパンについて話します。

デーヴィッド: 日本のパンはあんまり好きじゃないんだよね。イギリスで売られているパンと日本で売られているパンには大きな差があると思う。

ヨシコ: へぇ～そうなの？パンの文化はもともとイギリスのほうが長いでしょうけど、なにが違うのかしら？

デーヴィッド: 説明するのは難しいけど、日本のパンは何か僕には不自然な感じがするんだよね。たとえば、コンビニで買うサンドイッチにはミミが絶対ついてないじゃん！それはイギリスだったら有り得ないよ。あと、味はなんとなくおいしくない。日本人はイギリス人のシェフが作った寿司を食べたら同じような感じなんじゃない？

ヨシコ: 確かにそうね、私も子供の頃ってミミが嫌いだった。でも、最近では自分でパンを焼くようになって大好きになったの。だから、ミミがないと不自然というのは今はわかる気がするわ。あと、デーヴィッドがパン好きなのも伝わってきた！イギリスでは主食だものね。

デーヴィッド: うん、みんな子供の時からずっと食べてるものは好きって当たり前だよね。僕は生まれてからイギリスのパンを食べてるからそれには慣れてる。お米は嫌いなわけじゃないけど、なんとなく違うんだ。逆も言えるんだろうね。
