王制

This week, we will be discussing royalism.

David: Have you heard that Nepal is due to abandon its Royal system and have a republic instead? What do you think about it? Abolishing the monarchy is sometimes discussed in the UK, but generally most people don't mind having a Queen (or King). Obviously Japan also has a constitutional monarchy.

Naoyuki: Yes, I have. However I can't talk about it in great detail, because I don't know much about it. In Nepal's case I guess the King of Nepal had too much power and the ordinary citizens could not trust him. That led to the abandonment of the monarchy. In Japan we have the Emperor, but he doesn't have any power to change the government. So we don't mind having an Emperor.

David: We call it that a Constitutional Monarchy in English. In the UK, Denmark, Norway, Holland and some other European countries we have a similar system to Japan. We have kings and queens, but they have no power. In Britain the king or queen opens Parliament once a year, but that is all.

Noyuki: They are symbolic figures, aren't they? In this democratic era that style may be suitable for ordinary citizens, since they can basically decide what they want to do while at the same time having someone to look up to.

David: Yes, although a lot of people in the UK say that it is a waste of money to continue to support a monarch or emperor.

今週は王制について話します。

デーヴィッド： ネパールが王制を廃止して、代わりに共和制になるって知ってた？どう思う？君主制を廃止することはイギリスでも時々話題に上るけど、一般的にほとんどの人は、女王（または王）がいることは気にしていない。日本も明らかに構造上君主制だよね。

ナオユキ： うん、でも良く知らないから多くは語れないけどね。ネパールのケースは、王様が力を持ちすぎて、一般市民が彼を信頼できなくなったんだと思うね。それが君主制の廃止を導いた。日本では天皇がいるけど、政治を変えるような力は持っていない。だから天皇がいても気にならない。

デーヴィッド： そういうのを英語では、立憲君主政体というんだ。イギリス、デンマーク、ノルウェー、オランダやそれ以外のヨーロッパの国々でも日本と同じようなシステムを持っている。僕らには王様や女王様がいるけど、彼らは何の力も持っていない。イギリスでは、王様か女王様が１年に１度議会を開くけど、それですべてだね。

ナオユキ： 彼らは象徴的な存在なんだね。民主主義の時代では、そのスタイルが一般市民に合っているのかもしれない。基本的には市民がやりたいことを決められるし、敬うべき人もいるしね。

デーヴィッド： うん、でもイギリスの多くの人は王制をサポートし続けるのはお金の無駄だと言っているんだけどね。。
