アルバイト

Today's entry is about part-time work.

David: Lots of young Japanese people work part-time, don't they?

Yoshiko: You think so? Well, back in high school I preferred having fun at work every day to my school club activities. I used to work at a video rental place, and at a cafe... I had to earn my own pocket money, plus otherwise I wouldn't be able to buy the things I wanted to. What about you?

David: I hated working, because I'd rather laze around with my friends. But I did lots of part time jobs too. I used to be a labourer for a landscape gardener, and I also worked at pubs and nightclubs and cafes. The worst was working at a nightclub. I didn't used to finish work until 5 or 6am, and the customers were always completely plastered. But I had a really cute coworker, so it wasn't all bad. What was your favourite job?

Yoshiko: I suppose that means, which was the most worthwhile? I think they all had good points. I liked renting videos from the video shop, and I could eat some of the cakes at the cafe I worked at. I always really wanted to work at a seaside clubhouse though... Only young people can do that, can't they? Probably it's the same in every country.

David: I worked at a campsite in France one summer, as a security guard. That was a bit like working at a seaside clubhouse. I had free food and board for three months. I'd love to do that again someday, but maybe I'm getting too old for it.

Yoshiko: Sounds nice. Well, hey, if you start your own business, it doesn't matter what age you are.

今回はアルバイトについて話します。

デーヴィッド：日本の若者って、よくアルバイトをするんだね。

ヨシコ：そう？確かに私も高校生の頃は、部活よりバイトのほうが楽しくて毎日のように働いてたかも。

ビデオレンタルとか、喫茶店とか・・・いろいろ。おこずかいは自分で稼がなきゃ、好きなものは買えないしね！デーヴィッドはどうだった？

デーヴィッド：僕は友達とくつろいで遊びたかったから、仕事するのは嫌だった。でもやっぱりバイトしなくちゃ、ね。造園師の元で働いていたし、その後は色んなパブやクラブやカフェで働いてたんだ。最悪なのはナイトクラブだったね。朝5時、6時まで仕事しなくちゃいけないし、客はみな酔ってる。でも同僚でとても可愛い子が居たので、そんなに悪くはなかったね！　一番楽しかったバイトは何だった？

ヨシコ：う～ん。徳があるバイトかなあ？どれもあった気がするけど。ビデオは好きなのが借りられたし、喫茶店では料理を作ったりケーキをたまにもらったりして・・・やっておけばよかったと思うのは、海の家で住み込みとか。若い人しか出来ないでしょ？どこの国も、同じかもね。

デーヴィッド：僕はある夏、フランスのキャンプ場で働いてて、それは海の家での住み込みの仕事と似てるかも。給料貰わないで、家賃と食べ物は無料で暮らしてたんだ。そういうのはまたやりたいけど、やっぱり年取るとできなくなるね。

ヨシコ：いいわね～。どう、いつか自分でやるのってよくない？年でも出来るわよ。
