地球温暖化

Today, we will be discussing global warming.

Yoshiko: It's tough to narrow it down to one thing, but are you doing anything to help prevent global warming? I always separate my rubbish for recycling, but that's all, so I can't say I'm really helping much.

David: Yes, that's about all I do, too. To be honest I'm still not sure about global warming. I'm sure it is happening, but I'm not a climate scientist so I don't know whether it's down to humans or because of natural fluctuations in the sun's rays. Even if that is the case, though, it's important to recycle as much as possible. Have you heard of Kamikatsu?

Yoshiko: No, I haven't.

David: It's a town in Tokushima prefecture with a "zero waste" policy. There are no rubbish collectors. Everybody has to either compost their waste, or recycle it. There are 34 types of rubbish to recycle!

Yoshiko: Wow, sorting that out must take ages. Saying that, my grandmother used to put all her food waste in the soil in the garden, and eat pumpkins that she grew there. It's really good for the soil, right? She used to burn all of her burnable waste too. I wonder if there's anything simple like that we can do....

David: Well, I don't have a garden, so I can't compost my waste. Maybe once I've bought a house...

今日は地球温暖化について話します。

ヨシコ： 一口に言うのは難しいけれど、何かそのためにしていることってある？私は・・・ゴミの分別くらいかもしれないから、あまり協力的とは言えないわよね。　

デーヴィッド： うん、僕もそれぐらいだよね。実は、地球温暖化をちゃんと理解できていない。地球温暖化はあると思うけど、気象学者じゃないから、それが人間のせいか、太陽で起こってる自然的な変動のせいか分からない。ま、それはともかくとして、リサイクルするのは大切だと思う。上勝町って知ってる？

ヨシコ： 聞いたことないけれど？

デーヴィッド： 徳島県にある、「ゼロ・ウェイスト」政策のある町だよ。ゴミ収集者がいなくて、町の人が皆ゴミをたい肥にするか、自分でリサイクル・センターまで持たって行かなくちゃいけないんだ。ゴミの分別は、34種類もあるんだって。

ヨシコ： へ～すごい！それはとても手間が掛かるわね。そういえば、うちの祖母は家の庭に穴を掘り、生ゴミを捨てていたわ。そのゴミの中からカボチャなどが芽を出して、大きく育ったそれを食べたわ。きっと、栄養満点ね。それから、燃えるごみは自分で燃やしていたわ。私たちにできる簡単なことって何かあるかも・・・

デーヴィッド： でも今庭がないからゴミをたい肥にできないなー。多分家を買ってからかなー。。。
