体育祭

Today we'll be talking about Sports Festivals.

Yoshiko: It's getting cooler now, so it's the season for sports festivals, isn't it? I used to hate sports... I especially hated racing. What did you like?

David: I like ball sports, so I played a lot of cricket and football. But I did quite a bit of cross-country running too. I doubt I could do it any more, though! Why didn't you like running?

Yoshiko: Why!? There's cross-country skiing too, right? Seems pretty tough. The reason I didn't like sport was because it was so hard, and I couldn't see any results from the effort I was putting in. Particularly, I was really slow at running, so even though I was trying my best the teacher's said, "Put more effort in!" I couldn't believe it!

David: P. E. teachers are mean. I remember once we were playing rugby, and somebody stood on my friend's arm. He went to the teacher in real agony, but the teacher just said, "It's okay, it's only pain, keep playing." After the match my friend went to the hospital and it turned out he had a dislocated arm!

Yoshiko: Nightmare! Must have really hurt. You have to have fun playing sports, right? Anyway I feel nostalgic for my school days...

今日は体育祭について話します。

ヨシコ：そろそろ涼しくなってきて、体育祭の季節ね。実は私は体育は苦手で・・・特に徒競争が好きじゃなかったのだけど、デーヴィッドは何が好きだった？

デーヴィッド：僕はボールを使うスポーツがいいんだ。クリケットやサッカーが一番好きだった。でもクロスカントリーも結構やってたんだ。今は出来ないと思うけど！何で好きじゃなかったの？

ヨシコ：なんでって・・・クロスカントリーはスキーもやるんでしょ、ハードなのよね？なぜ、運動嫌いだったかというと苦しくて、頑張った成果が見えないものが多いからかしら。特に、走るのが遅くて、自分では真剣なのに真面目にやれとか言われたりして～ショック！！

デーヴィッド：そうだね、体育の先生は厳しいよ。僕はラグビーをやってた時、友達の手が、誰かに踏まれたんだ。で、「痛い」と先生に言ったら、「痛みだけだから続けな」と言われた。試合が終わってその友達が病院に行ったら、実は手が脱臼してたんだ！
