台風

Today's entry is about typhoons.

Yoshiko: A typhoon is on the way to America again. The scale is totally different from Japan, so I wonder if lots of people will have to be evacuated.

David: Probably. Japan is a mountainous country so it doesn't flood as easily. In the Southern part of American there are no mountains so if big waves come there's no protection. Speaking of which, have there been any typhoons in Japan yet this year? You don't often get very strong ones, though.

Yoshiko: Well, compared to other countries the damage caused by typhoons here is pretty small. Anyway, don't you think Japan stands out from other countries in not naming its typhoons?

David: Although if you named typhoons in Japan like American hurricanes don't you think it would be weird? Like "Typhoon Takeshi" or something. Anyway, sometimes because of typhoons the trains stop running, right? Have you ever been stuck somewhere because of that?
Yoshiko: That's funny, Typhoon Takeshi! No, I can't remember ever being stuck somewhere because of a typhoon, but I have because of accidents. What about you?

David: Once. The trains stopped so I decided to go home by bus, but eventually they stopped too, so I had to walk home. It took over 2 hours.

Yoshiko: Bad one. I suppose in that situation it doesn't really matter how wet you get - you just think, 'whatever'.

今日は台風について話します。

ヨシコ：またアメリカに台風が来てるみたい、日本とは規模が違うからあんなにたくさんの人が避難するのかしらね？

デーヴィッド：そうだよね。まあ、日本は山が多いからあまり津波は来ないだろうね。米国の南の方はそうでもないから波が高かったら大変だよね。そういえば今年台風がまだ来てないっけ？すごく強いのはあんまり来ないね。

ヨシコ：そうね、ほかの国と比べたら台風による被害は小さいと思うわ。それにしても、あのニュースで聞く台風の名前って日本以外は共通（？）みたいな気がしない？・・・日本が仲間外れみたい。

デーヴィッド：そうだよね。でも北アメリカみたいに名前を付けたら変だよね。「台風たけし」とか。。。でもたまに台風の影響で電車が走れなくなるね。台風のせいで帰れなくなったことある？

ヨシコ：台風たけし面白い！！うーん、台風のせいっていうのはあまり記憶にないかもね。電車の事故などはあるけど、デーヴィッドはあるの？

デーヴィッド：一回あるね。電車が走れなくなったからバスで帰ろうとしたら、それも動かなくなった。結局歩いて帰った。二時間くらいかかったんだ！

ヨシコ：あら～悲惨。土砂降りの雨の中歩くのなんて・・もうどうにでもなれ！と開き直るしかないって感じよね～。
