Springtime allergies in the U.S. and some possible causes.

Naoyuki: You've been sniffling a lot lately. Did you catch a cold?

Ken: That's what I thought, but my friend said it was because of an allergy. I always think spring is the main allergy season, and since I'm not so weak for springtime cedar allergies, I was surprised to that I now have have an autumn allergy.

Naoyuki: That is surprising. I think a lot of Japanese people don't expect foreign people to get the same allergies we have so quickly.

Ken: Well I resisted for several years, but a few years ago I started getting sniffles in the springtime, and now this year I have the same problem in autumn too, but it's not too serious. You know I read that allergies are a kind of man made ecological problem.

Naoyuki: Yes I've heard that as well. It sometimes happens when there are too many plants of one kind in the same area. It makes things unbalanced.

Ken: Yes we have that problem in the U.S. In some desert areas, like Arizona and California there are a lot of grass lawns and golf courses, and grass isn't a natural plant in such areas, so many people get grass pollen allergies.

Naoyuki: Yes and since we have planted a lot of cedar trees in Japan, there is a heavy amount of cedar pollen in the air in spring. Of course we need the wood from these trees, but having too many in one area makes a lot of pollen..

Ken: I guess when you try to change nature there can be some price to pay.

今日は日本の季節外れのアレルギーについて話します。

ナオユキ： 最近鼻ずーずーすってるね。風邪でも引いたの？

ケン： 最初そう思ったけど、 友達がアレルギーのせいだって言ってた。いつも春がアレルギーの季節だと思っていたし、春は杉のアレルギーには弱くなかったから、今秋にアレルギーになってびっくりしているよ。

ナオユキ： びっくりだねー。外国の人がそんなに早く僕らと同じアレルギーになるなんて、日本人の多くの人は思わないんじゃないかなー。

ケン： 数年間は抵抗してたんだけど、ここ最近は春にも鼻をすするようになったね。そして今年秋にも同じ問題が。。。でもそんなに大変じゃないよ。でも知ってる？アレルギーって人間が作り出した生態学的問題なんだよ。

ナオユキ： うん、なんか聞いたことある。同じ場所に１つの種類の植物がたくさんあり過ぎると、起きるみたいだね。バランスが取れなくなるみたい。

ケン： アメリカにも同じ問題があるよ。アリゾナやカリフォルニアにある砂漠地帯では、たくさんの芝生やゴルフ場がある。そのような場所では草は自然のものじゃないんだ。だから多くの人が草の花粉アレルギーになる。

ナオユキ： そうだね、日本でもたくさんの杉を植えたから、春になると大量の杉花粉が空を舞うよ。もちろんそれらの木から木材を必要としているんだけど、1つの地域にたくさんあることで、花粉もすごくなるね。

ケン： 自然を変えようとすると、なにかしら代償を払わないといけないのかもね。
