クリスマス

Today we'll be talking about Xmas.


Naoyuki: Japan is basically a Buddhist country. However, we enjoy the day as a big event. We meet a girl friend or a boy friend and give presents to each other. Parents also give presents to their children and eat the Christmas cake. How about in Kenya?

Juliana: Well, majority of the Kenyans are Christians therefore we all close down business, go to our home town, have an animal slaughtered for the celebration and off course go to church.

Naoyuki: Wow, I didn't know that majority of the Kenyans are Christians. So it's natural to celebrate Christmas Day. What do you think Buddhist Japanese celebrate Christmas Day?

Juliana: It‘s a day celebrated by a large population worldwide, for this reason the Buddhist are also allowed to join the Christians in the celebration.


Naoyuki: You are so generous. Now we can celebrate Christmas Day with an easy mind.

今日はクリスマスについて話します。

ナオユキ： 日本は基本的に仏教の国なんだけど、クリスマスを大きなイベントとして楽しむんだ。僕たち日本人は、彼女や彼氏と会ったり、プレゼントの交換をしたりする。親たちも子供たちにプレゼントをあげ、クリスマスケーキを食べたりするんだ。ケニヤではどうなの？

ジュリアナ： ええ、ケニヤのほとんどの人はキリスト教徒なの。だから私たちみんなは、仕事をするのを止めて地元に行き、お祝いのために食肉処理された動物を食べるのよ。そして、もちろん教会に行って。

ナオユキ： えー、ケニヤのほとんどの人がキリスト教徒だったなんて知らなかった。じゃー、クリスマスを祝うのは自然なんだね。仏教徒の日本人がクリスマスを祝うのってどう思う？

ジュリアナ： 世界中の多くの人に祝われる日だから、そういう理由では、仏教徒もクリスマスのお祝いに加わることは許されると思うわ。
