博士号

We will be talking about Ph.D.

Naoyuki: You've started studying for your Ph.D now, haven't you? How is it going so far?

David: To be honest I'm not sure, because I don't have a yardstick by which to judge my progress! But I think it's going okay. I feel free, because I can decide my own schedule, but that means I have to discipline myself to study hard.

Naoyuki: How long does it take to get a Ph.D?

David: Well, first you have to study for a year to get an M.Phil(Master of Philosophy), which is like an intermediate degree between a Master'sdegree and a Ph.D. Then, after that, usually it takes another two or three years. I have funding from the goverment until September 2012, so I have to hand in my thesis by the summer of 2012. But I plan to finish by 2011.

Naoyuki: Oh? So what are you studying about?

David: It's to do with international law, and how international treaties might have different applications in different countries, because of cultural differences.

Naoyuki: Sounds difficult.

David: It is! Sometimes I don't know what I'm going to do, but hopefully the more I research, the clearer it will become.

Naoyuki: I hope you get your Ph.D without any problems!

今日は博士号について話します。

ナオユキ： 博士号のための勉強がちょうど始まったんだよね？これまではどんな感じ？

デーヴィッド： 正直よく分らないね。どこまで進んだかを計る尺度がないからね。でも、うまく行っていると思うよ。自分で自分のスケジュールを決められるから自由に感じるし、でもそれって一生懸命勉強するように自分を律していかなければならないってことだけど。

ナオユキ： 博士号を取るにはどれくらいかかるの？

デーヴィッド： うん、最初に1年間、哲学修士を取るための勉強をしなければならないんだ。それは、修士号と博士号の中間にある学位のようなものなんだけどね。それからその後、さらに2，3年かかるのが普通だね。僕は政府から2012年9月までお金を出してもらっているから、2012年の夏までには論文を提出しなければいけないんだ。でも、僕は2011年に終わる計画をしている。

ナオユキ： あれ？そう言えば何について勉強しているんだっけ？

デーヴィッド： 国際法に関してなんだけど。文化の違いのために、どのように国際条項が異なる国々に異なって適用されているか。

ナオユキ： 難しいそう。

デーヴィッド： そうなんだよ！時々自分で何をやっているか分らなくなるよ。でも、研究をもっとやれば、よりはっきりしてくることを願っているよ。

ナオユキ： 問題なく博士号が取れることを祈っているよ！
