数学と言語

We will be talking about Math and Language.


Juliana: Did you know that there is a connection between math and language? I recently found out that, the Asians particularly the Japanese, Chinese and Koreans are quite intelligent. They have a natural ability in math which is influenced by their languages.

Naoyuki: What is that? You mean Japanese people have better understanding in Math? Could you explain it in more detail?

Juliana: Japanese language assists Japanese people to calculate faster because the numbers are logically organized unlike in other languages. For example, 30 in Japanese is 3 times 10 but in English 30 is thirty. This implies that the brain has to process the word then translate it to numbers but the Japanese don't waste time doing this part of translation.

Naoyuki: That sounds logical. So Japanese people are basically good at Math because of the characteristics of the language. I didn't know that.

Juliana:Well, in brief we can say that the language characteristics greatly influence the Math ability of the Japanese. Stay smart.

今日は数学と言語について話します。

ジュリアナ： 数学と言語の間に関係があるって知ってた？私最近見つけたのよ。アジアの言葉、特に日本語、中国語、韓国語は、かなり賢いわ。それら言語は数学において自然な能力があるの、言語によって影響されるね。

ナオユキ： 何それ？それって日本の人たちが数学をより良く理解しているってこと？もう少し詳しく説明してもらえる？

ジュリアナ： 日本語は日本人が計算を早くできるように助けているの。なぜなら他の言語と違って、数字が論理的に組織化されているから。例えば、日本語の30は、３つの１０でしょ。でも英語だと、30は、サーティーだから。これって、脳が言葉を処理してから数字に翻訳しなければならないってことなの。でも日本語は翻訳をするのに時間を費やさないのよ。

ナオユキ： 論理的だね。じゃー日本の人たちは言語特性のおかげで、基本的には数学が得意なんだね。知らなかったなー。

ジュリアナ： そう、要するに言語特性が大きく日本人の数学能力に影響しているって言えるのよ。賢いままでいてね。
