We will be talking about distinguishing between 'L' and 'R'.


Naoyuki: I'm having trouble distinguishing between 'L' and 'R' sounds when listening to English. Do you know a good way to improve?

David: They say that if you listen to words that begin with 'L' and 'R' over and over again intensively, it will become easier to tell the difference. A study was done a few years ago in which classes of Japanese students just performed such exercises for three weeks, and by the end of that period their understanding had markedly improved.

Naoyuki: Three weeks, eh? What method of practice did they use?

David: They just listened to pairs of words beginning with 'L' and 'R' over and over again, for example 'rice' and 'lice' and tried to identify which was which. You could try it at home using this website. All the instructions are in English, so that's good practice too! (Go to Lesson 4 for the 'L' and 'R' practice section.)

Naoyuki: I absolutely can't tell the difference... Let's see what happens after three weeks of hard work!

今日はLとRの聞き取りについて話します。

ナオユキ： 英語を聞くとき、「L」と「R」を区別するのが難しいんだよね。何か上達させる良い方法知らない？

デーヴィッド： もし「L」と「R」で始まる単語を集中的に何度も何度も聞けば、違いを見分けるのが楽になるんだって。2，3年前に研究されて、日本人の生徒のクラスで3週間そんな練習をやったんだけど、最後には、判断力がものすごく向上したんだよ。

ナオユキ： え、3週間？どんな練習方法だったの？

デーヴィッド： 彼らはただ、「L」と「R」で始まる単語のペアを何度も何度も聞いたんだよ。例えば、「rice」と「lice」で、どっちがどっちかを判別しようとした。このサイトを使えば、家でも練習できるよ。説明はすべて英語だから、それも良い練習になるね！ （レッスン４の「L」と「R」の練習セクションに行ってください。）

ナオユキ： 全然違いが分らないよ。。。3週間頑張ったらどうなるかやってみよう！
