和暦

We will be talking about The Japanese Calendar.


Juliana: The first time I came to Japan, I had a hard time understanding how the years are counted. We are now in the 21, Hesei while my birthday is 56, Showa. I am still unable to comprehend the whole system. Is there a simple explanation for this?

Naoyuki: Oh really? Japanese Calendar is changed when the Emperor in Japan died. So when you were born, the Showa Emperor was alive.

Juliana: This is an amazing counting system. I think it’s only the Japanese you have adopted and maintained such a system.

Naoyuki: There are two calendars in Japan. So we also used them for systems in companies. In 2000 we had Y2K problems, but we will have Showa 100 problems in 16 years especially in old systems. Anyway, there are some influences to our life using the Japanese calendar.

Juliana：Well, this is one of the most interesting subjects to discuss. I believe that the system will make the necessary adjustments to counter the Showa 100 problems.

今日は和暦について話します。

ジュリアナ： 私が初めて日本に来たとき、どうやって年が数えられているか理解するのに大変だったわ。今は私たち平成21年にいるでしょう。一方私の誕生日は昭和56年。私まだ全部を理解することができないの。これの簡単な説明ってできる？

ナオユキ： あー本当。和暦は、日本の天皇が亡くなったときに変えられるんだ。だから、君が生まれたときは、昭和天皇は生きていたんだよ。

ジュリアナ： なんてびっくりな計算システムなの。私そんなシステムを採用して、維持しているのって日本人だけだと思うわ。

ナオユキ： 日本には２つの暦がある。だから企業のシステムでもそれらを使うんだ。2000年には、Y2K問題っていうのがあったけど、16年後には昭和100年問題っていうのが起きるんだ。特に古いシステムでね。とにかく、和暦を使うことで、僕らの生活に影響もあるんだ。

ジュリアナ： ええ、これって議論するのにもっとも面白い議題の１つよね。私、昭和100年問題に対して、システムが必要な調整をするって信じているわ。
