Naoyuki: What's the difference between business and conversational English?

David: Mostly vocabulary. Businesspeople like buzzwords, so they often coin new words, like 'problematize'.

Naoyuki: I don't really understand that. What does it mean?

David: To problematize is to pose problems for a business plan or idea, usually as a way of making it better. To be honest, I never use that word!

Naoyuki: Oh. It's the sort of word that's used in a business context. There are lots of those, aren't there? Do you know 'aberu'?

David: No, what's that? Is it a verb?

Naoyuki: It's like a hybrid between English and Japanese. 'That person is available' has been shortened and made into just 'aberu'. I think it's only used in consultancy firms. But it's interesting, isn't it?

今日はビジネス英語について話します。

ナオユキ： ビジネス英語と日常会話の違いって何？

デーヴィッド： 主に語彙かな。社会人は業界用語とか好きでしょう。だから彼らはよく新しい語を造り出すんだよね、「プロブレマタイズ」みたいな。

ナオユキ： よく分らないなーそれ。何て意味なの？

デーヴィッド： プロブレマタイズするということは、ビジネスプランやアイデアについて、問題提起することで、大抵それらを良くしようとする方法として用いられるね。 正直僕は一度も使ったことないけどね！

ナオユキ： ふーん。ビジネスがらみで使われる類の言葉なんだね。たくさんあるよね、そういうの？「アベル」って知ってる？

デーヴィッド： いや、何それ？動詞？

ナオユキ： それは、英語と日本語が混ざった感じなんだけど。「That person is available（その人の手が空いている）」が短くなって、ただ、「アベル」というふうになったんだ。コンサルティング会社だけで使われているのかな。でも面白くない？
