新学期

We will be talking about a new school year.

Naoyuki: A new school year has just started in Japan. In the U.S. when does the new school year start?

Andy: The new school year starts in early September in the U.S. After summer is over. Do Japanese students mind going to school in the summer?

Naoyuki: They usually have summer holidays from the end of July to the end of August. So they can enjoy the summer. Is starting in September more common in the world?

Andy: In the West it is common to start in September.

Naoyuki: Oh, realy. How about the semesters? There are usually three semesters in Japan.

Andy: There are two in the U.S. But in college, there are three semesters: fall, winter and summer. Winter semester is a little shorter though and some students don't take it.

Naoyuki: There are two in college in Japan. There are many systems in the world, aren't there?

今日は新学期について話します。

ナオユキ： 日本では新学期が始まったばかりだけど、アメリカではいつ新学期が始まるの？

アンディ： アメリカでは9月の上旬に始まるよ。夏が終わった後にね。日本の学生は夏に学校に行くのって平気なのかね？

ナオユキ： 大抵、7月の終わりから、8月の終わりまで夏休みがあるよ。だから夏を楽しめるってことだね。9月に始まるのは、世界の中では普通なの？

アンディ： 欧米では9月は一般的だろうね。

ナオユキ： 本当に。学期はどうなの？日本では大抵3学期あるけど。

アンディ： アメリカでは2学期かな。でも大学では3学期あるね。秋、冬、夏と。でも冬学期は短いから取らない学生もいる。
ナオユキ： 日本の大学では2学期かな。世界にはいろいろな仕組みがあるんだね。
