Caroline: I realised American English is so dominant among Japanese people. Can you note the differences between American English and British English?

Naoyuki: Well, maybe I am not aware that I spaek American English. Do you think my English is American English? Actually I don't know much about the differences.

Caroline: Yes, I think you speak American English but with a few British words. I think you acquired most of your English skills based on American English and I noticed you have quite a number of books written in British English. This explains the mix up but you should know that there is no standard English. A language is only perfect if you can communicate, so it is really not important where you acquire your language from.

Naoyuki: If I can communicate, that is perfect. Sounds great! I'm relieved to hear that.

今日は英語について話します。

カロライン： 私気づいたんだけど、日本の人たちの間では、アメリカ英語が最もよく使われているのね。アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の違いって分かる？

ナオユキ： うーん、多分僕は、自分がアメリカ英語を話しているって気づいていないね。僕の英語ってアメリカ英語だと思う？実際違いはよく分からないよ。

カロライン： ええ、私はあなたがアメリカ英語を話していると思うわ。でもいくつかのイギリスの言葉とともにね。あなたが得たほとんどの英語力はアメリカ英語が基になっていると思うの。でもイギリス英語で書かれた本をかなりたくさん持っているでしょう。これが混ざっている説明になるのね。でも標準的な英語なんてないのよ。言語は、コミュニケーションができるなら、それが唯一完全ということなのよ。だから、どこから言葉を身に付けたかなんて、本当重要じゃないのよ。

ナオユキ： コミュニケーションができるなら、それが完全かー。良い響きだ。それを聞いて安心した。
