灰殻

We will be talking about the Ashes.

David: At the moment we are in the middle of a series of cricket games between England and Australia. Whenever England and Australia compete against each other it is called 'The Ashes'.

Naoyuki: What does 'The Ashes' mean?

David: Over a hundred years ago, Australia defeated England at cricket for the first time. When that happened a British newspaper published an article saying that English cricket had died, and would be cremated and the ashes taken back to Australia. The next time England played Australia, the newspaper said that it was a quest to "regain the Ashes". Ever since then when the two teams have played, it is to win "The Ashes Trophy".

Naoyuki: So the team which wins keep the trophy?

David: They keep it in name only. The trophy is old and fragile, so it is always kept in the musuem of the most famous cricket club in London.

今日は灰殻について話します。

デーヴィッド： 今、イギリスとオーストラリアの間で、クリケットの試合のシリーズ真最中なんだ。イギリスとオーストラリアが戦うときはいつでも、「灰殻」って呼ばれてるんだよ。

ナオユキ： 「灰殻」ってどういう意味なの？

デーヴィッド： 100年以上前、クリケットでオーストラリアが初めてイギリスに勝ったんだ。それが起こった時、イギリスの新聞はこういう記事を書いたんだ。イギリスのクリケットは死に、火葬され、灰殻はオーストラリアに持っていかれると。イギリスがオーストラリアと戦う次の試合に新聞は、それは「灰殻を取り戻す」ための冒険の旅だと書いた。そのとき以来、２つのチームが戦うときは、それは「灰殻のトロフィー」を勝ち取るためのものなんだ。

ナオユキ： じゃー、勝ったチームがトロフィーを保持しているの？

デーヴィッド： 彼らは名前だけを保持しているんだ。トロフィーは古くて壊れやすいから、ロンドンの最も有名なクラブの博物館に保管されているんだよ。

ナオユキ： ところで、クリケットって何？
