クリケット

We will be talking about Cricket.


David: So last time, you asked what cricket is. Cricket is a sport which originated in England and is played in lots of places that were part of the British Empire, like India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa and the Caribbean. It is a bit like baseball - in fact baseball came from cricket. It has been played for hundreds of years.

Naoyuki: Oh? I've never seen it in Japan.

David: It's a very minor sport in Japan, but actually there is a Japanese national team. They play in the seventh division of world cricket. Last time they played Gibraltar and won. But Gibraltar only has a population of 28, 875 people! So Japan's level is very low. The team has to work hard...

Naoyuki: So that sort of activity is going on! So if you want to represent Japan at the national level, maybe cricket would be a good place to start.

今日はクリケットについて話します。

デーヴィッド： 前回、クリケットが何かって聞いたよね。クリケットはイギリス発祥のスポーツで、インドやパキスタン、オーストラリア、南アフリカ、カリブの国々など、大英帝国 の一部だった多くの場所でプレーされているんだ。ちょっと野球みたいだね（実際野球はクリケットから出来たんだ）。何百年もプレーされているよ。

ナオユキ： へー。日本では見たことないよ。

デーヴィッド： 日本ではとてもマイナーなスポーツだからね。でも実際日本代表チームはあるよ。彼らは、世界クリケットの７部でプレーしている。前回は、ジブラルタルとやって、勝ったね。でも、ジブラルタルの人口はたった28, 875 人！だから日本のレベルはとても低いよ。もうちょっと頑張んないと。。。

ナオユキ： そんな活動しているんだね！じゃーもし日本代表になりたかったら、多分クリケットは始めるのに良いね。
