APEC 1

We will be talking about the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) conference today.

Frankie: I had a great bike ride on Tuesday... first I biked out to Ichigao, then followed the Tsurumi River Cycling Road towards downtown. Downtown Yokohama was a mess -- police and military helicopters everywhere! It was like a war zone!

Naoyuki: Ah, yes. That's all because of the APEC conference that's going on this week. 

Frankie: Yeah, they had set up police checkpoints around the entire perimeter of Minato Mirai. Cars weren't allowed through, but since I was on a bike it was no problem. When I got to the Aka-Renga Souko it was like a ghost town -- there were hardly any people there!

Naoyuki: A lot of the business owners are upset about the lack of business during the conference. Less people means less sales.

Frankie: That's true, but some businesses must be doing quite well. I bet upscale restaurants and hotels are making a killing with all of these diplomats and world leaders in town.

Naoyuki: That's probably true, but a lot of small business owners will be happy when the conference is finished!

今日はAPEC(アジア太平洋経済協力)会議について話します。

フランキー： 火曜日の自転車のツーリングは最高だったなー。。。最初は市ヶ尾まで乗ってきて、それから、鶴見川のサイクリングコースを繁華街に向けて進んだんだ。横浜の繁華街は混乱してたね。警察と軍のヘリコプターがいたるところにいてさー！戦争やってる地域みたいだったよ！

ナオユキ： あー、うん。すべて今週やってるAPEC会議のせいだね。

フランキー： うーん、彼らはみなとみらい周辺全体に警察の検問所を作ったんだよ。車は通行が許されてなかったけど、僕は自転車だったから問題なかったよ。赤レンガ倉庫に着いた時は、そこは廃墟みたいだったけど、ほとんど人はいなかった！

ナオユキ： 多くの企業経営者は会議中に人が来なくなって困っているんじゃないかな。人が少なくなるってことは、売上も少なくなるってことで。

フランキー： 確かに、でも、いくつかのビジネスにはかなり良いんじゃないの。高級レストランやホテルは、町に来ているすべての外交官や世界のリーダー達相手に大儲けしているに違いないよ。

ナオユキ： おそらくそうだけど、中小企業の経営者は会議が終わったらうれしいでしょう！
