日本語を話す時の問題

We will be talking about problems when speaking Japanese.

Naoyuki: How's the studying going for the JLPT?

Warren:  It's tough but I'm enjoying it.

Naoyuki:  Come to think of it you usually speak English at work so I haven't really heard your Japanese. How is it?

Warren: It's "maa maa". I know enough to get by in most situations but I do have some problems.

Naoyuki: What kind of problems?

Warren:  Well all of my teachers in the past were women, and also much of my practice speaking Japanese has been with women.

Naoyuki:  So what's the problem?

Warren: I kind of speak like a woman.  For example I had a friend who used to always say her own name instead of saying "watashi". I didn't realize that only women do that so I did the same for a while.

Naoyuki: Haha, that must sound weird.

今日は日本語を話す時の問題について話します。

ナオユキ： 日本語能力試験の勉強はどう？

ウォーレン： 大変だけど、楽しんでいるよ。

ナオユキ： 考えてみると、君はたいてい仕事の時は英語を話しているから、僕は君の日本語を本当聞いたことがないんだよね。日本語はどうなの？

ウォーレン： まあまあだね。ほとんどの状況で何とかやっていけるくらいは知っているんだけど、問題はあるんだよね。

ナオユキ： どんな問題？

ウォーレン： 僕、女性みたいに話すんだよね。例えば、僕の友達に、いつも「私」という代わりに彼女自身の名前を言っていた人がいたんだ。 女性だけがそうするって知らなくてさ、だから僕もしばらくそうしてたんだよ。

ナオユキ： はっはっは。変だよ。
