リバプール

We will be talking about Liverpool.


Naoyuki: You're from Liverpool, aren't you? What kind of place is it? All I know is that there's a good football team there.

David: Liverpool used to be a very important city in the British Empire, because it was the major Atlantic port. Ships would come from America, Africa and India to trade. So it became very rich, and was called "the Second City of Empire".

However after the Second World War the trade gradually declined and the economy got worse and worse, so now Liverpool is one of the poorest cities in Britain. However it has lots of huge and beautiful buildings.

Naoyuki: Maybe it was a little bit like Nagasaki's "Dejima" if we were comparing it to Japan.

David: Maybe so. I haven't been to Nagasaki though! Actually some people say Liverpool and Yokohama are quite similar, especially since both have a big Chinatown.

Naoyuki: There are Chinatowns in a lot of countries, aren't there? I hope someday I can go to the Chinatown in Liverpool.

David: Yes, try Liverpool ramen some time!

今日はリバプールについて話します。

ナオユキ： 君、リバプール出身だよね。どんなところなの？僕が知っているのは、良いサッカーチームがあることだけだけど。

デーヴィッド： リバプールは大英帝国の中でとても重要な都市だったんだ。大西洋岸の重要な港があったからね。アメリカ、アフリカ、インドから船が貿易をするために来てね。だからとてもお金持ちになって、「帝国の2番目の都市」と呼ばれたんだ。
でも、第2次世界大戦後、貿易が徐々に減って、経済がどんどん悪くなったんだ。だから今リバプールはイギリスの中で最も貧しい都市の１つなんだよ。でも、たくさんの大きくて、きれいな建物があるよ。

ナオユキ： 多分、日本で言う長崎の「出島」みたいだったのかね。

デーヴィッド： 多分、そうだね。長崎には行ったことないけど！実際、リバプールと横浜がとてもよく似ているという人もいるね。特に、両方とも大きなチャイナタウンがあるからね。

ナオユキ： チャイナタウンっていろいんな国にあるよね？いつかリバプールのチャイナタウンに行ってみたいなー。
デーヴィッド： うん、リバプールラーメンをいつか食べてみて！
